Privacy Policy

Last updated: 21 August 2026

Short version

Your images never leave your device. They are compressed inside your browser and are never uploaded to any server. We do, however, collect anonymous usage analytics about how the site itself is used — details below.

Your images

imgshrink compresses images entirely on your own device using your browser's Canvas API. Your files are never uploaded, transmitted, stored, or seen by us or by anyone else.

You don't have to take our word for it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and compress an image. You will see no upload request. You can also disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded — the tool will keep working.

Compressed images are re-encoded from scratch, which means all EXIF metadata is removed — including GPS coordinates, camera model, and timestamps. This is good for privacy, but keep the original file if you need that data.

Analytics we do collect

We use two third-party analytics tools to understand how the site is used. Both set cookies.

ToolWhat it collects
Google Analytics 4 Page views, approximate location (country/city level, derived from IP), device and browser type, referring site, and events such as loading an image or clicking download. It does not receive your images or file contents — only the file type and size in kilobytes.
Microsoft Clarity Session recordings of how you interact with the page — mouse movement, clicks, scrolling — plus heatmaps. These recordings capture your interaction with the interface, not the contents of your images.

We use this data only to understand which parts of the site work and which don't. We do not sell it, and we do not use it for advertising. Google Signals and advertising personalisation are turned off.

Cookies

The two tools above set cookies in your browser. We do not set any cookies of our own, and the site does not require cookies to function — compression works with cookies blocked.

You can opt out of Google Analytics across all sites using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, or block these scripts with any content blocker. Doing so will not affect the compression tool.

What we don't do

Data retention

Analytics event data is retained for 14 months, after which Google deletes it automatically. Clarity retains session recordings according to Microsoft's own retention policy. Since we store nothing ourselves, there is no data on our side to delete.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the "last updated" date at the top will change with it. Material changes will be noted here rather than made silently.
